Haywood Regional Medical Center EVS Director Struts His Stuff to Raise Cancer Awareness
May 3rd, 2010
Department directors at Haywood Regional Medical Center got into the spirit of April Fools' Day by participating in the first annual Dress and Re-Dress Cancer event.
The event gave the staff of each department the opportunity to 'cross dress' the director for their department. The purpose of this event was to raise cancer awareness and to recruit people to participate in the upcoming Relay for Life walk on May 21, 2010. Relay for Life provides research and education to find cures and support to those families that battle with cancer as a part of their everyday life.
"The Relay for Life event is something that I try to support in every way possible," says EVS Director Jason Poole, who won the award for 'Most Convincing' costume. "The Relay walk is a 24 hour event that begins with cancer survivors taking the first lap. If you have never participated in a Relay for Life walk, I recommend participating in the next one or organizing one at your facility."
The event was highly successful with more than 200 people signing up for the Relay for Life. Many cancer survivors stopped by to let us know they would be participating and really appreciated the hospital finding creative ways to get people involved in the fight against cancer. The event took place in the hospital cafeteria and was judged by the administrative staff.
"The Dress and Re-dress event was a great way to get staff involved, since they were responsible for 'cross dressing' their director," Poole explains. "I was awarded the 'Most Convincing Award' and it is proudly displayed in our EVS office for the staff to see."
