A Gumbo Cookout Brings Joy to Hospital in the Aftermath of Hurricane Laura

After Hurricane Laura swept through Southeast Texas and Louisiana, several hospitals in the Lake Charles area were forced to temporarily close their doors. This left patients and staff scrambling to deal with the effects of a hurricane on top of the ongoing pandemic.

At one hospital — as leadership rushed to open their doors back up as quickly as possible — a hospital employee remembered that HHS used to put on a gumbo cookout every year. She thought it would be a great idea to bring everyone in the hospital together and enjoy a classic Louisiana meal.

She reached out to Regional Vice President of EVS JC Young, who quickly made it happen and got several local companies to donate food and supplies to make enough gumbo for 200 people.

Even hurricanes and pandemics can’t stop the power of a community caring for each other.
