Removing Grease from Your Range Hood

Have you ever taken a look underneath your stove’s range hood? Well, if it’s been a while or if you’ve never done it before, you may be in for a not-so-pretty surprise. A range hood is used to filter the air in your kitchen. In doing so, it uses an exhaust fan to remove smoke, grease, debris, and odors that are released during cooking and release them outside of your home. Over time, the filter can become blocked, making it inefficient at doing its job. That’s why cleaning the range hood on a monthly basis is key to ensuring its effectiveness.

Tools Needed:

  • Degreaser cleaning agent
  • Anti-grease dish soap
  • Large pot of water
  • Small nylon detail brush
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Warm water

Procedure:

Wipe down the range hood

Start by cleaning the outside of the range hood with anti-grease dish soap, warm water, and a microfiber cloth to remove dust and grease that has accumulated.

Wash away debris from under the hood

To clean under the hood, apply a degreaser cleaning agent to the soiled areas. Using the detail brush and microfiber cloth, remove built up grease. Boiling water underneath the range hood can help loosen the stuck on grease. Remember to change the microfiber cloth as it becomes soiled.

Clean the filter

If the range hood filter is heavily soiled you may need to soak it in a solution of warm water and degreaser. Follow the instructions on the bottle of degreaser cleaning agent for the best results. After soaking for 15 to 20 minutes, use the detail brush to remove any remaining grease on the filter. Dry thoroughly and attach the filter back in place.
