About LUM
HHS’ Linen Utilization Management (LUM) program, launched in 2014, was developed to assist hospitals across the United States with an issue plaguing the industry — the overuse, misuse, and cost of linen.

Since its inception, LUM has helped hospitals reduce linen usage by more than 68 million pounds while providing significant cost savings — often reaching six figures.

From 2014 to July 2021, HHS’ LUM program has:

  • Eliminated 68,411,695 pounds of linen usage
  • Conserved 184,027,460 gallons of water
  • Saved 1,368,234 kilowatt hours
  • Reduced 8,483,050 pounds of greenhouse gas

David Kraeger, President of Healthcare Diversifications at HHS, comments on this achievement, “We are committed to identifying where there is overuse and misuse of linen within healthcare facilities and developing best practices and tracking metrics to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water, and save energy. Together, with support from hospital frontline caregivers, laundry processing partners, and the commitment of forward-thinking healthcare leaders, our goal is to double our sustainability outcomes within the next five years.”
